Recently, my fellow globetrotter shared in an interview that I had spent one billion VND traveling to 20 countries. The internet went wild with speculations. Some couldn’t comprehend how I could be so indifferent to family matters and assumed that I must come from a wealthy background. But let me set the record straight—I am not an affluent heir. In fact, I was just an ordinary journalist working for a newspaper. The truth is, it’s a myth that you need to be wealthy or sponsored by your parents to travel extensively. I am here to debunk that misconception and share my experiences of traveling on a budget, even for free!
Let’s dive into some practical strategies I used to embark on thrilling journeys without breaking the bank:
- Participating in Specialized Events and Workshops: During my time as a journalist, I had the incredible opportunity to attend around six media-related events abroad. Most of these were either free or nearly cost-free (some offered 50% sponsored flight tickets, while others covered the entire expense, except for daily expenses). I ensured to specify my freelance status in my visa applications and event registration. This showcased that my expertise was relevant to the event’s content, and I could make meaningful contributions. Voila! That’s all it took!
The same applies to students, professors, researchers, and anyone passionate about their field of interest. Engaging in research projects and tracking international events related to your study can open doors to sponsorship opportunities.
- Engaging in Contests and Awards: Embassies, cultural centers, and media organizations frequently host competitions and awards. For instance, you could write about a country and win a sponsored trip or participate in youth exchange programs throughout Southeast Asia.
Recently, the German embassy organized programs focused on the future of the EU, theater, or the cultural history of Germany for a week or more. Such opportunities are abundant and waiting for you to seize them!
- Involvement in Cultural Exchange and Community Activities: Though I personally haven’t participated in these, I have friends who traveled to India, Nepal, and Laos for volunteer work and cultural exchange programs. Keep an eye out for such initiatives from international or local organizations.
- Pursuing Study Abroad: Studying abroad need not be limited to long-term courses. Short-term exchange programs, summer schools (for writers, photographers, and professionals), and free training courses for specific industries all present chances to experience different cultures.
During my one-year Chevening scholarship program in London (fully funded, mind you), I visited over a dozen EU countries. Some may argue that I was more focused on traveling than studying, but in reality, I excelled academically and received an excellent result, which eventually led to a fully-funded Ph.D. scholarship (with only flight tickets and insurance to cover). This serves as a testament that being outstanding opens doors of opportunities in today’s globalized world.
- Remaining Vigilant for Opportunities: The world is full of opportunities; you just need to be aware of them and act upon them. Whether it’s participating in robot invention competitions for engineering students, debating contests for law scholars, or photography workshops with sponsorships, there are always chances in every field. Research, network, and be proactive!
Now, I want to emphasize that joining such events isn’t merely about scoring free trips. These experiences also allow you to connect with like-minded individuals from various industries and interests. You learn from them and share your knowledge in return. Engaging in these activities, especially if you are a young professional with limited CV experience, enhances your prospects in the job market. Employers value dynamic candidates with a broad range of experiences.
In conclusion, before envying others for their extensive travels, ask yourself some critical questions: What are my study and work capabilities? Have I been seizing opportunities? What is my proficiency in foreign languages, particularly English? It all boils down to YOU!
In the end, budget travel is not an unattainable dream—it’s a reality for those who are resourceful and proactive. So, embark on your journey of exploration and enrichment, discover the world on a budget, and let your passion for adventure guide you towards the life you’ve always dreamed of!
